Shelling Out for More: Cream of Crab Soup
Maryland is renowned for its crabs, so trying the cream of crab soup at Phoenix Upper Main felt like the perfect next step after my recent crab dip experience. While I generally love soup, seafood hasn’t always been my favorite, but after enjoying the crab dip, I figured I’d give the cream of crab a try. Although my Maryland friends have been raving about this soup for ages, I first opted for the dip. Phoenix Upper Main turned out to be an excellent choice, a vibrant spot bustling with a variety of crab dishes.

From the very first spoonful, the soup impressed me with its rich, chunky texture. It was served with crackers, just as my Maryland friend insisted was “the best way to eat it.” A hint of Old Bay seasoning graced the top of the soup; a flavor I’m not usually drawn to, but in this dish, it blended perfectly. The soup carried an unmistakable taste of the Chesapeake Bay, where blue crabs are of local identity. Even as an appetizer, it was surprisingly filling. While I wasn’t entirely sure about the thick consistency, the generous amount of crab more than made up for it. Dining there was more than just about savoring a meal, it was about immersing myself in a local tradition that bonds lifelong Marylanders with newcomers like me.
